The Community Interpreter® – Training for Health Care Interpreters
To put it simply, The Community Interpreter® International Edition is the only national training program in the U.S. for community interpreters. It is a program of the highest caliber, always up to date and based on the highest quality content and finest pedagogy in the field.
It is designed to be delivered as either a 40- to 60-hour certificate program. It has also been adapted for longer programs by colleges and universities. The Community Interpreter® can be given as a medical interpreting program or geared for educational, social services or general community interpreting, as needed.
Medical Terminology for Interpreters
Prepare for national medical interpreter certification! This one-day workshop on Medical Terminology for Interpreters offered by CCC since 2006 is a vital first step. Two national job surveys showed that medical terminology is a critical component of the healthcare interpreter’s performance and medical terminology will be tested for both national medical interpreter certifications.
Not to worry: this lively one-day workshop isn’t dry. The day is packed with interactive activities that focus on Greek and Latin roots and affixes, medical specialties, six body systems (with some anatomy and physiology), diseases and disorders, symptoms, medical abbreviations and more. The session includes a 134-page published handbook that includes Spanish translations for almost all the terms and activities; however, the workshop and handbook were also designed for interpreters who speak any other language. This enjoyable day is also invaluable preparation for anyone who seeks medical interpreter certification!
This program is approved by the American Translators Association for 7 ATA CEPs and by the International Medical Interpreters Association for 0.75 IMIA CEUs.
Introduction to Health Care Interpreting
This 4-hour introduction to the practice of health care interpretation is for bilingual staff of health care facilities. This overview provides bilingual staff with the opportunity to learn what is involved in being a health care interpreter, and to determine if they are ready for further screening and training.

Interpreting in Palliative Care
The demand for palliative care services has grown with the aging of the population and our evolving understanding of appropriate end-of-life care. Hospitals, clinics, and nursing facilities are challenged to provide such services across different cultures and languages. For healthcare interpreters, the ability to interpret these unique encounters is a useful skill that requires specialized training.
The Palliative Care curriculum, funded by the California HealthCare Foundation, was designed for working interpreters who have completed introductory training in health care interpreting. This is an 8-hour training and includes activities that allow interpreters to review and practice skills such as sight translation and consecutive and simultaneous interpreting while helping them learn more about palliative care as a new and rapidly growing field in medicine.
Stress Busters for Interpreters
This 90-minute workshop addresses both obvious and less apparent sources of stress, the physiological and health consequences of these stressors and offers simple and powerful techniques to change stress responses and increase job satisfaction.

Interpreting for Cancer Genetics
Interpreting for Cancer Genetics is a curriculum developed in 2015 by veteran healthcare interpreter trainer Cindy Roat and medical anthropologist Galen Joseph and her team at the University of California, San Francisco for use by interpreter trainers in preparing interpreters to work in cancer genetics. This 4-5 hour workshop presents basic information about cancer genetics, introduces specialized vocabulary with exercises, provides opportunities for interpreting practice and discusses unique challenges facing interpreters in this area. The curriculum is available here for free download and includes everything needed to teach the workshop, including lesson plans, handouts, and language-specific materials in Spanish, Cantonese and Russian.
